It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our President and company founder Frank Koch. He died peacefully in hospital on August 8, 2011 at the age of 77 after suffering a stroke a few days earlier. His loved ones were by his side.
Frank was born and raised in Cologne, Germany during turbulent times. He was formally trained as a tool and die maker and immigrated to Ottawa, Canada in 1956 where he started a family. In the 1960’s his entrepreneurial spirit led him to Ogdensburg, New York where he started several businesses.
It was his involvement with coating thickness test instruments that most defined his career. DeFelsko Corporation began by importing and selling instruments from Germany. Before long, under Frank’s leadership, the business switched to manufacturing these test devices in the U.S. and quickly grew to become a world leader in the design and production of quality, hand held paint test equipment known as PosiTector, PosiTest and PosiPen. Frank travelled the world developing relationships with a network of dealers to service a variety of industries including automotive, aerospace, shipbuilding, powder coating and corrosion protection of metal, wood, concrete and composite materials.
Under his guidance, the company invested heavily in the research and development of advanced technologies to measure the thickness of coatings non-destructively and introduced many innovative products. Today, the company he started employs over 50 skilled people working at its manufacturing location in Ogdensburg.
Frank’s extraordinary combination of a bright mind, outgoing personality, dedication, and tireless work ethic influenced the products he made and the business relationships he developed.
Frank is survived by his daughters Linda and Sandra, his sons-in-law David Beamish and Marc Dicaire, and by his four grandchildren Michael and Paul Beamish, Matthew and Anthony Dicaire. He cherished the time spent with his family.
Frank was still actively involved with DeFelsko Corporation and his presence and guidance was closely felt each day by his employees. His son-in-law, David Beamish, has assumed Frank’s responsibilities as President of the company. Frank’s daughter (and David’s wife) Linda retains her role as Vice President. Both David and Linda had the privilege of working with Frank at DeFelsko Corporation for almost 25 years and are committed to carrying his legacy forward.
