General
Q&A
What
are my choices?
DeFelsko
offers a variety of certified
thickness standards, certified shims, and non-certified
shims as accessories to our coating thickness gages. They
may also be used with many competitive models.
How do I select
the appropriate product?
STANDARDS are
the best solution for verifying the calibration
and operation of any coating thickness gage (including
pull-off gages) and for fulfilling both ISO and
in-house quality control requirements. They are
accurate to within ±0.01 mil (±0.25 µm).
Prices range from $95 for individual plates to
$345 for sets. (see Standards Q&A).
|
CERTIFIED SHIMS Simulate
a coating over the customer's particular substrate
material or shape. Gage performance can be conveniently
verified on a regular basis as called for by some
international test methods. Unlike
coated STANDARDS they can be used for verification
and adjustment directly over the customer's unusual
substrate shapes and conditions. They also provide
an economical alternative to STANDARDS with a reduced
accuracy of ±0.1 mil (±2.5
µm). They are not appropriate for use with pull-off
gages. Prices range from $45 for individuals shims
to $195 for a set of eight. (see Shims Q&A). |
 |
NON-CERTIFIED SHIMS provide a quick operational
check of the instrument by allowing the user to perform
practice measurements. They can also be used to protect
the probe when measuring on tacky, rough or hot surfaces.
They are not appropriate for use with pull-off gages.
Price for a set of five is $10. (see Shims Q&A). |
 |
How
often should they be changed?
User
specific calibration intervals should be established based
upon frequency of use, handling practices and measuring environment.
Visibly scratched or worn CERTIFIED SHIMS and STANDARDS should
be replaced. (see replace shims or replace standards)
