PosiTector UTG
Scan Mode B is a specialized setting on ultrasonic thickness gages like DeFelsko’s PosiTector UTG, used to create a "cross-section" view of a material. While a standard ultrasonic reading only gives you a single number for the thickness at one specific point, Scan Mode B provides a visual profile of the material's underside as you move the probe across the surface.
How it Works
1. Continuous Measuring: Instead of taking one measurement and stopping, the gauge takes several readings per second (often up to 20 or more).
2. Cross-Sectional View: As you slide the probe along a pipe or plate, the device plots these readings on a graph. The top of the graph represents the smooth surface you are touching, and the bottom line represents the internal or "back" wall.
3. Corrosion Visualization: If there is a pit, a rusted-out section, or thinning inside the metal, the line on the screen will dip. This allows you to see the "shape" of the corrosion.
